Down in Copper Basin, that's where Peggy Allen waits
For a jury to decide what will be her fate
The mother of five children, the youngest Lora Mae
Peggy shot their father & may have to go away
Victim of a dream disease, little Lora Mae has suffered
And wouldn't be alive today if it wasn't for her mother
Each week they go to Memphis & the trips keep her alive
That's where she takes her treatments, this little girl of five
The children range in age from five years to fifteen
Gail & Bobby, Aronofsky, Lora Mae & Marleen
They often begged their mother to take them & go away
She's explained their dad was sick & that they'd have to stay
Back in early August, was on the 7th day
Peggy's been to Memphis, she & little Lora Mae
Come Home & found her husband very drunk & very mean
He had thrown a knife at Gail & almost killed Marlene
That awful Wednesday evening Peggy took her husband's life
To protect her children, mother overshadowed wife
Robert Allen laughed & bragged that he'd kill them everyone
Peggy had to make a choice & it was not an easy one
Robert Allen was a man sick in body & mind
And people who know Peggy know she's not the killing kind
Even if she's parted from the one's she holds so dear
The folks in Copper Basin named her mother of the year
