Sadie was a slave on a plantation fine

this was right around the Civil War time.

Sadie she worked in the house so grand

when South against the North took their stand.

The people she worked for were not kind or nice

Sadie swore their hearts were made of ice.

Many a slave was hung up and whipped

paid a terrible cost for the smallest slip.

Worst of slavery in that place took it’s stand

such horrors there were man against man.

But something was watching and it’d get it’s due

for all the things the slaves there were put through.

One day the master knocked Sadie to the floor

and the watching ghost couldn’t take any more.

That night the ghost took over Sadie it’s true

to change that night there was nothing she could do.

And late that night after the master was in bed

it whispered terrible things in Sadie’s head.

She got some kerosene she poured it in the house

curtains, carpets, and furniture all of it she doused.

Then she struck a match threw it on the floor

that grand fancy house went up with a roar.

The master now he never made it out

no one ever knew how the fire came about.

Now the big grand fancy house is gone

and all the poor slaves they have moved on.

They say when the wind blows through there

you can hear the master’s whip cracking through the air.
